The Lands Department

Proper care and management of our land are as important today as it has always been for our people. Our goal is to protect Madawaska Maliseet First Nation Land while creating business opportunities in accordance with environmental regulations and our Land Laws. Lands staff work on land leases/permits, land laws, Band Member interests, Additions to Reserve, and securing business opportunities with a priority for environmental protection.

For over 50 years, the Government of Canada has had ultimate control over the management of our reserve land. That all changed in 2018 when the MMFN took steps toward self-government by adopting a land code making it the 1st First Nation in New Brunswick to achieve independence over its own land use.

Since the adoption of our land code, our operational progress has grown exponentially.
